The report that the United States Shipping Board lias characterised the plan of the Trans-Oceanic Company to build six thirty-flve-knot Atlantic liners, designed to cross in four days, as being 'ipen to technical criticism will not surprise British marine engineers, as the scheme has always been looked upon with a certain element of suspicion, writes the “ Shipping World,’' The proposed liners, it may be recalled, were to have a length of 900 feet, with a Koss tonnage of 35,000, and were to propelled by geared turbine machinery of 160,000 s.h.p., driving four propellers. Steam was to be raised in sixteen special water-tube boilers designed to operate at a pressure of 4001 b, and a total superheat of 700 deg. Fa.hr. The weight power ratio of the installation

worked out very closely to that adopted in battleship practice, and was about half that employed in fast destroyer work. In spite of the moderate boiler and fuel ratings proposed, many we.re of the opinion that such machinery would not prove to be entirely free from trouble in regular Atlantic service.
