"AERIAL.”

Notes and News. At time of writing (Wednesday), the prospects of good reception conditions ruling during the week-end are favourable. Static was very severe on Tuesday night, presaging a storm of sorts, which should clear the air for the week-end. A word or two again about battery eliminators. During the past fortnight half a dozen cases have come under notice of sets developing bad distortion, or refusing to function on the last stage of audio, and, in every instance, it was found that the second-stage audio-frequency transformer was burned out. The cause was the unduly high voltage employed for the power valve. Another case was one in which both stages of audio developed bad “ motor-boating ” noise. Here, also, the cause was the use of too high a voltage. Eliminators should be carefully and intelligently handled. If you have the choice of several or a variable voltage, use the lowest pcfcsible consistent with good tone and volume. It is better to increase the volume control arrangements on the set and use low voltages from the eliminator, than vice versa. And there is more enjoyment to be obtained from clear and just nicely audible volume from one’s speaker than the horrible din one so often hears turned on by people who think that wireless is not wireless unless one can hear the loud speaker half a mile away. Details of this evening’s programmes to be broadcast by New Zealand stations appeared in last night’s “ Star.” sc ti a Studio Notes.
