OUTBOARD MOTOR RACING CLUB HOLDS MEETING.

The newly-formed Canterbury Outboard Motor Boating Club held its first races on Saturday afternoon. They were a great success. The water was good, and the air conditions perfect. Altogether there were nine entries, and a large number of spectators watched the speed boats from the shore. The exhibition given during the afternoon showed that- the engines were of a most reliable type. Whereas last year, at tho Selwyn, the outboard engine developed many defects, on this occasion a speed of twenty-five miles per hour was reached by tho B class in the championship event.

Great interest was taken in the extreme ease with which the engine was carried about and attached by simple thumb screws to the stern of the crafts Weighing less than sixty pounds, thev were lifted by one man and fitted in a few seconds, and developed in thqir trials up to nine horse-power. '; r, j In. the first Canterbury championship Mr G. Andrews won the cup presented by Mr W. Stacey. In the handicap event, Mr W. Stacey won John Burns and Co.'s trophy. The following are the results:— Canterbury Championship—Gyn (G. Andrews owner and pilot) 3, Ginger (Steans) 2, Baby G. (Gant) 3. Letter Box, Ruddy Baby, and Stacey also started. Handicap Race for speed hulls and B class engines—Stacey (Stacey), 7min 16sec, 1; Ruddy Baby (Lamb), 7min 19sec, 2; Baby G. (Gant). 7min 30sec, 3. Ginger, Gyn and Letter Box also started. Tho handicap race for dinghies and flatties attracted only two entries. It is not expected that aiiy further racing will take place till the spring, the speed making a wet race extremely cold. The club will meet next Thursday, when it will accept further handsome donations from each of the brothers Stacey. It hopes to meet the Lake Kanieri Club at a future date and is preparing to make trials with outboard engines developing up to forty miles per hour.
