P.R. SYSTEM OF VOTING WANTED.
CR SULLIVAN TO MOVE FOR ITS ADOPTION.
The question of reverting to the proportional representation system of election will be brought up at the next meeting of the Christchurch City Council, when Councillor D. G. Sullivan will give notice of motion that the next council election shall be held under the proportional representation s ystem. In answer to a question yesterday Councillor Sullivan stated that proportional representation was part of both the municipal and national platforms of the Labour Party, and on that account representatives of the various organisations connected with the Labour Party had discussed his motion and had agreed to support it. NOT ENAMOURED -OF IT. Personally he was not enamoured of the system, stated Councillor T. 11. Butterfield ; when the question was put
to him, and he said he would prefer to see it out of the platform, but as it was in the platform on which the party had been elected he felt that it was a matter of the party's honour that it should make good its promises and re-enact the measure. NO DEFINITE OPINION. On the matter of the moving of the guns from the reserves. Councillor Sullivan was loath to make any statement.. Personally he had no definite opinion either way. The matter was still under discussion by the Reserves Committee, and the decision would come from there. NOT YET SETTLED. The Cathedral Square alterations were another matter which was stili undecided. Neither the council nor the Labour majority on the council had discussed the subject since the Board of Health had raised its objections. Previous to that the council had had legal advice that it was quite within its power to carry out the alterations, but the council had at the 4ime decided to go further and had instructed its solicitors to obtain the most authoritative opinion on the question. When that opinion was obtained the matter could be settled.
