Riccarton Records

By Special Correspondent of the “ Star.”

THE INSPECTOR'S “OFF" NIGHT. Motor speedists and other traffic offenders had a night of immunity from inspectorial interference on Saturday last, because Mr R. W. Robson, the inspector, was assisting Mrs Robson to entertain a large party Pf guests at a “ house-warming ” at their new home. The" hosts weer indefatigable in attending to the creature comforts and en tertainment of the visitors, the piece de resistance being a “ mock court ” where numerous offenders against law and order were deftly dealt with by an imperious judge. There was a bountiful supper, some singing and dancing, “ musical arms,’’ and, so on, midnight bringiftg wi|h. ;it “Auld Tang Syne,” and cheers for the host and hostess. IN MEMORY OF A TEACHER. Master Freddie Stevens, who received the whole of his primary education at Wharenui School, has won the first Robert Mounsey Memorial Scholarship, and will be rewarded with £5 to assist in the payment of his singing tuition fees. The scholarship is a lasting expression of the love and esteem which the late Mr Mounsey won from scholars, fellow-teachers arid parents alike during lengthy service as assistant master at Wharenui School. He was, though unusualy gentle, a splendid disciplinarian. He loved music and singing, and under his guidance and tuition many promising children were entered at the Christchurch Competitions, with striking success: whilst the 'Wharenui School frequently supplied the winners in the school choir competition. A meeting of subscribers is to be called shortly to receive the report of the committee in charge of the movement, and to finalise plans for raising another £lO or £ls so that £IOO may be invested to produce sufficient to provide an annual scholarship for all time, without encroaching upon the principal. RICCARTON WESLEY TENNIS CLUB. An enjoyable social was held in. the church vestry on Tuesday, May 15, the occasion being an evening given in honour of Miss Doris Wright, of Sockburn, who is shortly to be married. Thirty members were present, and a very pleasant time was spent in games, competitions and musical items. A dainty supper was served by the members, after which opportunity was taken by the Rev B. J. James to thank Miss Wright for her work when secretary of the Club, and to wish her every prosperity in her future life. Miss Annie Pettigrew, secretary of the club, then presented the guest of the evening with a crystal salad bowl and vase. The gathering concluded with the singing of “ Auld Lang Syne.” RICCARTON RECIIABITES. The fortnightly meeting of the Riccarton Rechabites xvas held in the Riccarton Town Hall on Wednesday evening, there being a very large attendance. The Phillipstown Tent was present in full force and was heartily welcomed by Chief Ruler Bro Lovell. The Chief Ruler of Phillipstown replied and thanked the Riccarton Tent for their hearty welcome. The secretary, Bro W. F. Saunders, on behalf of the Riccarton Tent, congratulated Bro A. Martin, District Chief Ruler, on his election to the highest office of the district, and wished him every success in his term of office. Bro Martin, in returning thanks, asked all members to assist him to make the district much stronger than in the past, and hoped that the district would be able to say he had done- “good and faithful service.” After the business had been transacted the rest of the evening was spent in a social way. The best thanks were ex tended to those who supplied music and assisted at supper.

RICCARTON LEAGUE FOOTBALL. The Riccarton Club now fields a fourth grade, for players under lOst. This local team is recruited entirely from the Rugby ranks, and, notwithstanding the coaching during the first week or two, must b 6 under some disadvantage. The rapidity with which the local club has grown speaks well for the keenness of the boys and. those in control of them, while the founders deserve every encouragement in their endeavour to provide healthy recreation for the youth of the district. The need of a central playing ground is being more keenly felt than ever during the present school holidays, as the boys are compelled to go outside the borough to indulge in practice. ST. JAMES'S SOCIALS. The second of the 1928 series of St. James's socials will be held in the Town Hall on Thursday evening next. The committee is planning an enjoyable programme, and no doubt there will be the usual large attendance. UPPER RICCARTON METHODIST CHURCH. There was again a large congregation at the musical service last Sunday. Mr C. Pilling gave an organ recital before the service commenced, and Madame Wighton sang “Abide With Me.’* Tomorrow is Young People’s Day, and again special services are- planned, with Mr Pilling’s organ recital from 0.10 to 6.30 p.m. All are welcome. W.C.T.U. There was a good attendance at the usual monthly meeting of the Riccarton branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, held on Thursday afternoon. Mrs C. Barrell presided. Devotional exercises were led by Mrs James, who read extracts from Dr Forsdyck’s book on the importance of prayer. A “Temperance Fact” was taken from an address by Commander Evangeline Booth; telling of the improved conditions existing in America since prohibition was enforced. A letter of appreciation was forwarded to the Rev H. Nelson Wright, who has left the district, thanking him for Bible lessons he has given in Wharenui School. Correspondence was received from Mrs Cook, Diminion Superintendent of Bible-in-Schools. re a public meeting to consider further the Bible-in-Schools question. It being Peace and Arbitration Day, Mr Johnstone, treasurer of the League of Nations Union, spoke on “Peace, in Relation to China.” The address was highly interesting, and several questions were asked. The meeting concluded with a hearty vote of thanks to the speaker.
