Brighton Breezes

NOTES. To-day is the Mayor's eightieth birthday. The residents of New Brighton extend their greetings and best wishes to him. The Town Clerk (Mr Middleton) leaves for his annual holidays on Monday. The estimates for the 1928-1929 year will be presented to the council on Monday evening. - The Amateur Athletic Association meeting, which was to be held in Joyland last Saturday evening, was adjourned till a later date. W.E.A. The psychology classes held in the Methodist Schoolroom under the auspices of the W.E.A. every Monday evening will- commence at 7.30 instead of at 8 o’clock for the remainder of the season. W.C.T.U. The monthly meeting of the W-C.T.U. was held on Thursday afternoon, Mrs 11. Hall presiding. Miss B. M. Harband, superintendent of the Scientific Temperance Instruction Department, gave a very interesting ten-minute talk. The president welcomed Mrs O. S. Pearn. It was decided that the annual Peace Day meeting be held in the Oasis Tea Rooms on Monday next, at 2.30, when Mr Donald Grant will be the speaker. Three new members were initiated. A very successful house meeting was held during the month at Mrs W. Hooker’s residence, when Mrs M’Kenzie gave an address. The chair was taken by Miss B. M. Harband. S.B.S.F. On Wednesday evening an enjoyable hard-up social was held in the Bridge Street Hall. Following were the prizewinners: Hard-up costume, Mrs Moses; men. Mr C. Sawtell; juveniles. Miss Muriel Hulme and Master W. Hulme; lucky spot, Mr and Mrs W. Hulme; musical chairs, Miss D. Retallic: Monte Carlo, Mrs Sutton. The music was supplied by Mrs Robinson, Miss M. Grammer, Chegwin (cornet), Brooks (banjo). Mr S. Grammer was M.C.

PERSONAL. Mr S. Sawtell, of Wellington, is the guest of Mrs C. Sawtell, Jervois Street, South Brighton. A pleasant evening was held recently at the residence of Mr and Mrs R. Dixon, Hood Street, New Brighton, to celebrate the coming of age of their youngest son. Walter. Games, competitions, musical items and dancing were indulged in. Those present included: Mr and Mrs R. Dixon, Mr arid Mrs C. Dixon. Mr and Mrs L. Dixon, Mr and Mrs Webb. Mr and Mrs Gibson, Mr and Mrs Duncan Mr and Mrs Bucknell, Mr and Mrs A. Duncan Misses Duncan, (three), Misses Webb (3), Miss P. Harrison, Mrs Herd (Wellington), Mr Sutherland (Wellington), Mr B. Hatch, Mrs Smith, Edna and Joyce Dixon, Ralph Hooker, L. Hooker, Master Noel Herd and Russell Bucknell.
