POULTRY NOTES.

(By “CROW-BLACK”) The next fortnightly meeting of the United Pigeon Fanciers’ Club will be held on Wednesday evening in the Christchurch Poultry Club rooms, Lichfield Street. During the evening a table show for racing homers and utility pigeons will be staged. Mr C. Woodhouse (homers) and Mr C. P. Bradford < utility pigeons) will officiate as judges. All fanciers and anyone interested are invited to be present. The annual club show of the Old English Game Fowl Club of New Zealand will be held in conjunction with the Ilutt Valley society’s show at Petone on July 5 and 6. Mr F. R. Bust has been nominated to judge. At the recent Nightcaps Poultry Club’s show the only exhibitor from Christchurch was Mr H. Cranfield, who exhibited two Black Minorca pullets and gained first and third places. The championship for utility Minorcas was won by Mr Ramsay, of Dunedin, with a very fine cockerel. The Lyttelton Fanciers’ Club will hold a fishing excursion on May 27, the proceeds being in aid of the club funds. It is to be hoped that the Christchurch fanciers will support the outing. Mr R. Pearce, secretary of the South Island Poultry, Pigeon and Canary Association, has received a number of new standards for Norwich and Yorkshire canaries from the North Island association for distribution amongst fanciers. This standard was adopted by the leading Canary and Cage Bird Clubs in New Zealand, and is a beautiful piece of work. At the meeting of the Christchurch Poultry Club on Monday evening, it was decided that the club should meet every Monday until after the show. All farmers and intending exhibitors are reminded that entries for the Christchurch Poultry Club's annual show close to-night. Entries can be made in the club rooms, Lichfield Street. Late entries will be accepted up till Saturday night on payment of late entry fee. Mr T. Cummings, the well-known Black Minorca specialist, has received information from Mr W. Bradley. manager for Lord Dewar, that he is forwarding two cockerels (one White Leghorn and one Black Minorca) in fulfilment of his order. These birds are expected to arrive about the first week in June. Mr F. Kingsford, well known as a breeder of racing homers arid a judge, has been elected to adjudicate on the homer pigeon classes at the Dunedin Fanciers’ Club’s annual show, to be held on June 14 and 15. I understand that a large number of local exhibitors intend patronising this fixture. The Christchurch Poultry, Pigeon and Canary Club held a meeting on Monday evening, the president, Mr G. jjjt, •

E. Jeffreys, presiding. Before commencing the business of the evening, a motion of sympathy was passed to the relatives of the late Mr W. Taylor, a very old member of the club, in their sad bereavement. Correspondence was received from the Canterbury Flying Club, the New Zealand Utility Poultry Club and the Christchurch Homing Society, thanking the Poultry Club for the use of the necessary plant for their recent shows. The Canterbury Flying Club, in a further letter, stated that the flying race flown in conjunction with the show had been a very severe test, only one bird, the property of Mr H. Rule, homing in race time. The club had extended the time to allow birds to qualify for second and third places. The Pigeon Club stated that under its rules Mr Rule’s bird takes the first, second and third money, and asked for the Poultry Club’s ruling as regards specials. It was decided that, as the Pigeon Club ha‘d extended the race time, the club's prizes should be awarded as intended in the schedule. The birds to finish second and third were owned by D. Cunningham and A Jones respectively. The Canary Club inquired for the same room in the barracks as it- had been allotted last year for its show. This request was agreed to. The Old English Game Club was granted a meeting room during the currency of the show. An intending exhibitor in pheasants wrote asking if provision could be made for exhibiting these birds. The request was agreed to. The matter of making final arrangements for the annual dinner was left in the hands of the executive. It was decided to meet every Monday until the show. ed from the Granity Poultry Club, asking permission to hold its show at Millerton, owing to the usual hall being engaged on the club’s date. The secretary had replied giving all particulars and his action was endorsed. The Hokitika Poultry Club wrote asking to be allowed to add a number of new classes for Old English game bantams and Sussex, and stated that Mr F. Dacre had been elected to judge all classes at the show. The request for alterations was agreed to. The Waimangaroa Club’s schedule was in order and passed. The judge is Mr G. Bundy. This club has a very large number of special prizes this year—s 6 in the open section and 62 for utility, canaries and pigeons. Mr T. Bruce, secretary of the North Island Poultry, Pigeon and Canary Association, sent the new canary standards, which are considered a great improvement. The standards are available to any fancier who applies for them. The Christchurch Homing Society held its annual show Saturday. Four classes were on the schedule and they drew seventy-four entries. The classes were old cocks, old hens, young cocks and young hens. The exhibits were of good quality', and competition was very keen. The judge, Mr C. A. Anderson, had a hard task to find the place-getters and his decisions met with general approval. A large number of fanciers visited the show, and the society is to be complimented on its splendid effort to cater for the young fanciers. The following were the awards:—Old cocks: H. N. May first, second and third, V. North fourth. Old hens: H. Allard, first and special, B. H. Nixon second, H. N. May third, H. O. Brown fourth. Young cocks: L. Booth first and special, E. R. N. May second, IT. Allard third. The fancy has lost by death another of its old-time fanciers in Mr W. Taylor, who passed away last week. The deceased was a very hard worker in the Christchurch Poultry Club for many years. He was a breeder and exhibitor of crested and Scotch fancy canaries, and was a very hard man to beat in these varieties. He also exhibited gold and silver-laced Wyandottes. Mr Taylor was also interested in .dogs and kept a number of daschunds as a ho!> by. sy'mpath.v of all fanciers is extended to the relatives in their sad bereavement.. The Temuka Poultr3 r , Pigeon and Canary Club has decided not to hold a show this year, owing to insufficient support. This is to be regretted, as both the Timaru and Temuka Clubs shows were handy for Christchurch exhibitors. It,is to be hpped that these two clubs wflfVidt drop out altogether and that next season wo shall see them again taking their places in the list of shows. The writer has received schedules from the Taranaki Poultry Club, the . Hastings Poultry, Pigeon and Cage Bird Society, and the Waimate Poultry Club. EacK club has a very attractive list of cups and specials to be competed for. Black Leghorns promise to be good classes at the Poultry Club’s shows. Several new local fanciers will exhibit and the writer has received information from several outsiders.
