FORENSIC CLUB. The Sumner Forensic Club held its first debate on Tuesday evening last. Mr J. Barr presiding. The subject matter for debate. “That the removal of war trophies is in the best interests of the community,” provided such an animated and close discussion that the voting was even when the ballot was taken. The chairman decided to leave the issue as it w’as. The principal speakers included Messrs F. 11. Matthews, P. J. Toomev, Douglas Smith and W. Collins. Other members taking part in the general discussion included Messrs C. Sherrard, J. Rhodes, A. J. Scott, B. D. Watson, J. E. Tait, R. Knox, and J. Barr. The matter set down for the debate next Tuesday night is “That the gambling spirit in man is detrimental to his progress.” Mr W. Bow-den will occupy the chair. SUMNER-REDCLIFFS BUSINESS MEN’S ASSOCIATION. A meeting of the executive committee of the association was held on Monday last. The president (Mr J. 11. Thomas) presided. There were also present: Messrs J. IT. Hampton, IT. A. Ford. la. H. Chapman. IT. D. Bates, F. J. Adcock, E. T. Chitty, J. Donkin and R. Knox. Tietails of q-nportance to the borough as a whole were discussed, and if they are confirmed at the general meeting to be held at an early date next month will be submitted to the Press. General satisfaction was expressed at the new lighting arrangements of business frontages in Sumner and Redcliffs. and the marked improvement of the borough at night was commented on most favourably. It was decided to approach the council to have new* name plates supplied for the borough streets, as the ones now in use were in a somewhat dilapidated state. It was felt that something should be done to minimise the danger of speeding motorists, especially in Redcliffs, and action was suggested to make examples of offenders. SUMNER REDCLIFFS ROWING CLUB. A meeting of the executive of the club was held on Monday night. Mr C. Hart presided. After some discussion it was decided that the club close the season in the form of a social evening, on June 5. It was also decided that the crews which were successful during the season should be presented with photographs instead of medals. The chairman congratulated the crews on the fine work done during the season. The club had been successful at Lyttelton, Akaroa. Christchurch and Kaiapoi, and the crew that went to Wellington did remarkably well. The matter of enlarging the shed to hold the new boats .was left over for the time being.

PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN’S MISSIONARY UNION. The Sumner branch of the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union held a social afternoon in the Sunday school last Thtirsday. the Rev and Mrs M’Ara welcomed a large number of ladies. The programme was as follows: Musical items and songs. Mesdames Langdalc, Russell. Smith and Kelham. Misses Gates and Gerrard. Mrs Kel ham (accompanist). Recitations. Miss Menzies and Mrs Vance. LADIES' MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB. A large number of members attended the weekly shoot of the Sumner-Red-cliffs Miniature Rifle Club last Wednesday night. The following were some of the best scores-: Mrs Foster 67. Misses M. Whitfield 66, F. Allen 66. I. Merry 64. C. Bamford 61, 11. Bamford 55. Miss Jones, who is a junior, made 60. The brooch for the week was won by Mrs Foster (seniors) and Miss Jones (juniors). FIRE. On Tuesday evening, the Volunteer Fire Brigade was called out to a fire at a four-roomed house in Wakefield Avenue near the gasworks. The house was an old one. p.nd had not been occupied for some considerable time. It was completely gutted, the flames having obtained a strong hold before the arrival of the brigade. TENNIS. The Sumner Tennis Club has just concluded an extremely successful season. All the competitions were keenly contested, and the organising of fortnightly tournaments proved a big factor in the revival of club interest. The following are the season's winners: Men’s singles championship, 11. Ogier; men's handicap doubles, R. Neville and H. A. Bishop: ladies’ handicap doubles, Mrs D. C. Cowan and Miss L. Partridge: combined doubles G. Browne and Miss Browne; ladies’ championship singles, Mrs D. C. Cowan; ladies’ handicap singles, Mrs Cowan; Yankee tournament, best aggregate, ladies, Mrs Cowan, 98 points; men, R. 11. Henley, 101 points. BEAUTIFYING ASSOCIATION. Mr F. C. Cooper presided over the annual meeting of the Sumner Beautifying and Beach Improvement Association. The annual report stated that a great deal of work had been carried out during the year. Walls and flower pots were constructed near the Clifton tram stop, also at the foot of Clifton Terrace. Kerbing was constructed on the Esplanade, and trees obtained for St Leonard's Square. In this connection the thanks of the association were due to Mr G. Foster, who gave the trees very careful attention during the summer. The membership now stood at 146. The thanks of the association were due to Messrs Undrill, Bassett, Buttle, Moore, Foster, Woolf, Wearn and Buxton for gratuitous labour; Mr and Mrs S. W. Dean, for the organisation of a successful dance; and various donors of cash. In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet, the chairman referred to the retirement of Mr H. Buttle, a valued member of the association since its inception; to the generosity of Mr G. Humphreys; and to the splendid service rendered by the secret-

ary, Mr J. S. Young, whose tireless work for the association had been invaluable. The election of officers resulted as follows Patron, Mr G. Humphreys: president, Mr F. C. Cooper; vice-presidents, twenty-two were elected; honorarv auditor, Mr F D Cother; honorary treasurer, Mr W. V. Siddall; honorary secretary, Mr J. S. Young: assistant honorary secretary. Mr A. J. Scott; committee, Messrs E. A. Johnson, T. B. Boulton. F. H. Mathews. J. A. Booth, J. C. M’Donald. T. IT. Undrill, A. J. Scott, J. T. Moore. S W. Dean, J. S. Wearn. S. K. Bassett. J Waller and G. Harper. Mr H. Buttle was elected a life member of the association. Referring to the work for the coming year, the chairman said that the most important was the proposed beautifying of the Esplanade near the Cave Rock. After considerable discussion on the merits of the scheme, it was decided to refer the whole matter to the incoming committee. Mr Buttle reported that the trees on Scarborough Park were now firmly established. FIRE BRIGADE DEMONSTRATION. The Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade will hold a big demonstration in St Leonard’s Square on Labour Day. In order to raise funds, it is proposed to hold a jumble sale. PERSONAL. Miss M. Barber will be visiting her parents at Sumner next Sunday, where she will spend a few days before leaving for London for a long period of further musical studies. TRAM STOPS. At the last meeting of the Tramway Board Mrs M'Combs asked the Board to fix the date when the decision to change the sixth section from Celia St to Redcliffs Post-Office, and the seventh would come into operation. The Board has fixed June 1 as the date for the change.
