SHIRLEY-ST ALBANS NOTES.

(By Special Correspondent of the “ Star.”) LOYAL BENEVOLENT LODGE, M.U.1.0.0.F. The lodge held its usual fortnightly meeting on Monday night, N.G. Brother I. Scott presiding. Correspondence was leceived from the District Secretary stating that the deputies to the B.M.C. would present their report on Friday, June 1. One maternity claim was passed for payment. Brother E. P. Lane was nominated for E.S. A number of brothers signified their intention to take part in the jubilee celebrations. At this stage Grand Master T. Wells, of the Lyttelton District, and officers and brethren from the Loyal Norwich Lodge, Lyttelton, entered the room and received a very hearty welcome. One candidate was initiated into the Order. G.M. Brother T. Wells and P.D.G.M. Brother R. F. W. James acting as conductors. One candidate was proposed for membership. The lodge adjourned for harmony and a card match was played, which resulted in a win for the I.oval Norwich Lodge by seven games. A social evening was held after the match. N.G. Brother I. Scott proposed the toast of the “Loyal Norwich Lodge,” which was responded to by G.M. Rrother T. Wells. Visitors from the following lodges were present:— City of Christchurch, Volunteer, Timaru and Caversham (Dunedin). Items were given by P.G. Brother F. Cole and N.G. Brother I. G. Scott. ST ALBANS PARK EQUIPMENT. The caretaker of the St Albans Park received a shock recently when he went to inspect the children’s equipment. He found several of the seat swings, which were made of strong iron, rods, twisted like corkscrews The matter has been placed in the hands of the police, who attribute the damage to a gang of 3'ouths who have been frequenting the park. The swings were repaired by the City Council workmen. HOPE OF ST ALBANS, U.A.O.D. The usual meeting of the Hope of St Albans No. 2 U.A.O.D. was held on Tuesday evening, A.D. Brother Stiles presiding. Visitors present were P.G.P. Brother J. Fisher, R.A.D. Brother C. Dunsford and D.P. Brother Lee. The report submitted by the No. 1 Chapter was discussed and approved. A.V.A. Charge competition took place, six. brothers having entered, Brothers T. Fisher, C. Dunsford and Lee being appointed judges. The first prize was '-on by Brother Niinmo and the second by P A. Nimmo with his prize, congratulated him on the splendid rendering he gave of the charge. STREET IMPROVEMENTS. The City Council workers at present are busy filling in the sunken portion of the footpath in Cranford Street., near Cornwall Street, and regrading and metalling the west side portion of the , load, which was one mass of potholes. l Westminster Street has also been j gicatly improved, and footpaths in a number of streets have been topdressed. Several streets, such as Forfar Street, Francis Avenue. Warrington Street, and Win ton Street, are badly in need of attention. The council would greatly assist residents if it insisted on the sewerage contractors putting the roads back to their former state as soon as possible after the excavations have been filled in. ST ALBANS RECREATION CLUB. The club lias accepted the offer, with thanks, of Mr K. H. Ridder, treasurer of the club, to alter and remodel the upstairs room at. the rear of the hall free of charge. The job is not a small one by any means, as the beam which keeps the first floor joist is supported bv iron rods which run from the three principals down to the floor and into the beam. It is the intention of Mr Ridder to take awa>* the three iron rods, alter the principals to allow for more headroom, and strengthen the beam. Two enlarged photos of the teams which won the Melhuish Shield and the Tunior Cup have been framed and hung on the wall of the club room. PERSONAL. The many friends of Miss Hobday, of Westminster Street, will be extremely sorrv to hear that she m St George’s Hospital, suffering from a severe illness. Miss Hobday is one of the St Matthews Church's most ardent workers. She has also assisted to iaise funds for St George’s Hospital. ST ALBANS SCHOOL DANCE AND SOCIAL. | On Saturday last the, dance and ! social was well attended. Mr Plumer-. I offidlted as M.C and Mr Anderson ' again presided at the piano I he Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss N Witley and Mr Marshall, and other prize winners were, Mrs Rennell and Mr G. Sey. NEW METHODIST SUNDAY SCHOOL. A well-attended meeting of the Edgeware Road Methodist congregation was held in the church on Thursday cvcn-

Werren presided and on behalf of the trustees explained the plans which were there for inspection, and . outlined the ways and means by which , the trustees proposed to finance thc . scheme. By a unaniir dv.s vote the meeting approved of the undertaking and authorised the trustees to proceed with the building. Mr G. X. Lucas was appointed clerk of works. It is understood that the building is to be completed not later than November 1. During the evening Mr Werren made an appeal for contributions and £212 was promised in the room. It is anticipated that £SOO will be raised by a canvass of the congregation. Towards the undertaking there is in hand £350. The Church Building and Loan Fund have authorised a loan to the trustees of £SOO. Any deficit after the canvass has been made will be met by a private loan.
