KILLED OLD COUPLE DURING THE NIGHT. (United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) * (Received May 19, 12.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, May 19. George Gordon, thirty, has been convicted and sentenced to death for the murder of an elderly couple, who were storekeepers, near Bairnsdale, on February 16. Their names were Richard and Catherine Clements. The pair were foully murdered during the night, their heads being battered. « Gordon lived in the neighbourhood. His clothes - were bloodstained, and his fingerprints were on a chest of drawers, giving the chief clues to his arrest and conviction. Gordon’s defence was an alibi.—Australian Press Association.
