“KILL-JOY JIX” SAYS WHIST DRIVES FOR MONEY ARE ILLEGAL.
(United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) LONDON, May 16. Sir William Joynson-Hicks. Plome Secretary, was questioned in reference to a recent decision by which a whist drive, with money prizes, in the interest of charity, was held to be illegal. He pointed out that whist drives for money prizes were held to be illegal away back in 1912. Mr J. Maxton (Labour): Are you aware that owing to its restrictions on recreations the Government is known as the “Kill-jo)' Government” and you as “Kill-joy Jix”? Sir William: I cannot override the decision of the Court, though I do not Object to whist drives. He said that he could not at present promise legislation on t.he subject.—Australian Press Association—United Service.
