DRUNKEN DRIVER WHO KILLED WOMAN, GETS 12 MONTHS.
MUST NOT USE CAR AGAIN FOR 5 YEARS. Per Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH. May 18. In the Supreme Court this morning, George Cravy Smith, a stock dealer at Hawera, who was convicted of negligently driving a motor-car while intoxicated and with causing the death of a woman on February 24, was sentenced to twelve months’ imprisonment with hard labour, and was prohibited from holding a driver’s license for five years. He will also pay £4O, costs of the prosecution, in default an additional two months’ imprisonment. John Howard William Tapp was sentenced to twelve months’ reformative detention for a false pretence. Harold Middleton Lee, for forging and uttering and a false pretence, was admitted to probation for five years, was ordered to keep a prohibition order in force during that time, to make restitution of £l2, and to pay £6 6s costs of the prosecution.
