COMMITTEE OF WOMEN’S CLUB WILL HOLD SPECIAL MEETING TO FRAME REPLY.

STRONG resentment is felt by lifembers of the committee of the Canterbury Women’s Club regarding the remarks made by the Mayor and some of the councillors at last night’s meeting of the City Council when a letter from the committee protesting against the council’s proposals in connection with the conveniences in Cathedral Square came before tire meeting. • Mrs .1. A. Flesher, president of the club, stated this morning that there was a gi-eat deal she would like to say regarding the matter, hut, as the committee was holding a special meeting this afternoon for the purpose of drawing up a reply to the council, she would not make any comment in the meantime. “The very least that the council should have done was to have received the letter courteously instead of hurling insults at us,” Mrs Flesher added. “ The Mayor’s remarks were quite uncalled for.”

“Oh, you men, fencing having a man like that as Mayor of the city," declared a member of the committee, when if she had any comment to make regarding the Mayor’s remarks. “The best thing to do in the circumstances,” she added, “is to ignore the remarks. I think the council might at least have shown us a little courtesy. That is the very least that one could expect, but instead of courtesy we receive insults. The Mayor should know that Christchurch does not belong to the Mayor and Councillors, but to the citizens as a whole, and I do not think they have a right to desecrate the Square in the manner they propose. I don’t think the council is representing public opinion in the matter. “It is a pity the council does not tidy up the roads and do some business worth while instead of playing the fool in the council chamber.” A business man who was asked his opinion of the matter said that quite apart from the question of whether the conveniences should be in the Square or not, the Mayor and some of the Labour councillors had shown a very poor spirit in using the occasion as an excuse for insulting the members of the Women’s Club.

“The Mayor seems to be throwing his weight about rather too much just now. and it is time he was put in his place,” the speaker added.
