COUNCIL TO RECEIVE SHARE OF PETROL TAX FOR FIRST QUARTER.

The chairman of the Main Highways Board has written to the City Council stating that the sum of £1387 4s would be paid to the council as its share of the petrol tax for the period to March 31. 1928. He also stated that these payments would be made quarterly in future. The council decided at its meeting last night that the amount paid each quarter be earmarked to pay interest and sinking fund on the road scheme for the improvement of the streets of the city. Councillor D. G. Sullivan, M.P., said that the amount stated did not represent a fixed amount for each quarter. During the quarter in question a good deal of petrol was used on which the tax was not paid. He thought a higher return could be looked for in subsequent quarters.
