TREES ACROSS LINE DELAY EXPRESSES.
MUCH DAMAGE REPORTED AT PALMERSTON NORTH. Per Press Association. PALMERSTON’ NORTH, May 1. The easterly gale which raged here last night did considerable damage throughout the district, besides causing great inconvenience to countryusers of electricity and interruptions to the telephone service. Sheds were unroofed, fences levelled, and at least one chimney in town was blown down. The damage to power and telephone lines was caused by trees being blown down and carrying away- wires. Rain fell intermittently throughout the night, but only 21 points were registered, while the thermometer showed a substantial drop. Field's express ran into trees on the line two miles south of Levin last night. Little damage was done to the engine, and the train was only- delayed half an hour. The Limited express was running behind Field's and was also help up, and continued at a reduced speed on account of the potential danger from other obstacles, reaching here an hour and a half late.
