LAUNCHES ASHORE AT TAURANCA HARBOUR.
Per Press Association. TAURANGA, May 1. A north-east gale of unprecedented violence swept the town and district yesterday, accompanied by heavy rain. No great damage is reported, although launches and other small craft in the harbour were considerably buffetted and several came ashore, some suffering considerable damage. The telephone service was considerably upset and the electric current failed for about a quarter of an hour. Slips occurred on the Kaimai road, but the motor services to Matamaoa are being maintained. Beyond one small slip and a slight washout, the railway between here and Waihi suffered no damage, and the train service has not been interrupted. The gale dropped during the. night and to-day is bright and calm.
