POSITION No. 344. By G. H. Slocum. Black—lS, 23, king 8.
BRISBANE TEAMS PREMIERSHIP. Keen rivalry exists between the Brisbane and the South Brisbane A teams in the fight for the association premiership. South Brisbane were leading up to the last match, when they were defeated by Brisbane, making both t'eams equal with eight points. On paper, Brisbane, with such players as Horsfall, Gray and Evans at the top boards, seem to be the stronger side, but on performances this season there is not much to choose between them. The following games, taken from the “MidWteek Sports Referee,** were played in the last match, which was won by Brlsbane A team by 5 wins to 3 and 7 draws. “Edinburgh.*'
White wins. (a) Tescheleit’s “Master Play" gives .27 —23 here. (b) A good move. (c) 10—14 might draw, but the position looks weak after 24—19, 3 5—24, 28—19. (d) White forces a fine win from here. “Cross.”
Drawn. (a) 5—9, 22—17, 23—26, 17—13, 9—14, 13— 9, 26—30, 25—21. 30—26, 9—6, 26—23, 6—2, 23—16, 2—6, 14—18, 21—17. 18—22, 6—9, 22—25, 9—14, 16—20, 14— 16, 20—27, 32—23, 12—26. Black wins (Ketchum’s "Handy Manual”).
(b) 26 —SO was suggested here as an improvement.
