Hawke’s Bay delegates to the annual meeting of th 6 New Zealand Rugby Union are to endeavour to arrange a game for the Ranfurly Shield with Canterbury this year. A decision along these lines was made at a meeting of the management committee of the union last week. Mr N. A. M’Kenzie said that Hawke's Bay had to play Taranaki, Wairarapa, Wellington and Manawatu away from home this year, but if thought advisable the visit to Palmerston North might be postponed till next year. Regarding the proposal to endeavour to challenge for the shield he declared that he was very much in favour of it. It was decided that the delegates to the New Zealand Union’s annual meeting next Thursday be empowered to arrange a challenge with Canterbury. The Technical College Old Boys’ senior team gave a very fair exhibition of the Rugby game against Varsity on Saturday, but it was felt at the time that combination seemed lacking, and there was a tendency for the players to go too much on their own. It is explained that the club has not yet secured a coach for its senior team. It is a pity that the team should be handicapped in this way, for it certainly has the material for a good side, and- needs only a little expert coaching to develop the team-sense necessary in a first-class side.
Western Soccer Club have this season struck a goalie who, from indications so far, is a very useful man. He is G. Colville, and in both his games has shown form seldom seen in a club player.
