AID FOR UNEMPLOYED URGED BY LABOUR MEMBER IN AUCKLAND.

TELEGRAM despatched TO PRIME minister.

(Special to the “Star”). AUCKLAND, May 1

A telegram, urging immediate steps to be taken to relieve unemployment in Auckland, was despatched to the Prime Minister yesterday by six Labour members of Parliament. “Approximately 1000 unemployed are now registered in Auckland/’ says the telegram. .“Nearly 900 are able-bodied men. If unemployed women were included, the figures could be multiplied by three, without exaggerating the position. These figures are appalling in view of the present distress and the likelihood of increased unemployment during the coming winter. We would be glad to have an assurance that immediate steps will be taken to relieve the position."

MANY HANDS PUT OFF AT FREEZING WORKS.

(Special to the “Star”). AUCKLAND. May 1

Since the beginning of March the' Moewera, Westfield, Horotu and Southdown freezing works have been slackening off as far as killing for export is concerned. Five hundred butchers and general workers have been placed on the labour market for the next eight months.

Stressing the need for national undertakings to absorb surplus labour during the winter, a freezing industrialist states that it is not economic to have a large number of men who engage in seasonal occupations prod\icing nothing for two-thirds of the year.
