FERRY VESSELS TO BE OVERHAULED.

MAHENO WILL TAKE UP RELIEF RUNNING. The Union Company’s ferry steamers Maori and Wahine, will be withdrawn from the Lyttelton-Wellington service in rotation commencing on May 23. Both vessels will be relieved by the Maheno, well known on the intercolonial run between Sydney and New Zealand, and now laid up in Wellington. The Maori will be withdrawn from the ferry service at Lyttelton for her annual overhaul on May 23. She will resume running on June 7, when she will replace the Wahine, which will go into dock for annual repairs. On June 21, the Wahine will come out of dock and will recommence her ferry run from Lyttelton. In order to resume her usual timetable, the Maori, which will arrive in Lyttelton on the morning the Wahine comes out of dock, will double back to Wellington after unloading her passengers, on a daylight trip. The Maheno will relieve the Maori and will make her first run from Lyttelton to Wellington on May 23. She will be withdrawn from the service when the Wahine resumes running on June 21. The Maheno, which was well known as a hospital ship during the war, is a steel triple screw vessel of 5323 tons. She was built in 1905 by W. Denny and Bros., Dumbarton, and has her headquarters at Wellington. After the war the Maheno was refitted out by the Government before being handed back to her owners. She has two travel classes, and is well fitted out.
