LBCKTB DEFEATS GILLESPIE. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, April 29. About 5000 people witnessed the contest between Leckie, feather-weight cha.mpion of New Zeala.nd, and Gillespie, feather-weight champion of Australia, in the Drill Hall last night. The contest went the full fifteen rounds, and Leckie won by a small margin of points. Leckle held the advantage in open fighting, but Gillespie showed up excellently and was stronger in close work. The bout was recognised as one of the best ever seen in Dunedin. The gate receipts totalled £7OO. BOUTS AT EXCELSIOR ACADEMY. A very interesting evening’s entertainment was conducted by Mr J. Thomson at his Excelsior Academy on Saturday evening. There was a large attendance, and special interest attached to a six-round work-out by the ex-amateur middle-weight champion. Clarrie Poeock, who is engaged to appear in a contest at Oamaru at an early date. He boxed six fast rounds of three minutes eacli, his opponents being A. Thompson, A. Birchfield, and W. Carey. The Connor brothers, Thomas brothers, and K. Gabb and T. Harrison, all paper-weights gave excellent displays. V. Howeli and A. Mullins provided a clever exhibition, and G. Wright and C. Blaeklock boxed three fast and vigorous rounds. Others who gave exhibitions were F. Andrews H. Emmorson, C. Pearce. J. Swell, and W. Davey. A much appreciated item was the blindfold boxing contributed bv W. Carey and O. Wright.
