CONVALESCENT HOME MATRON TO RETIRE
Yesterday afternoon there was a ! happy gathering at the Vicarage, Cashmere Hills, of those who wished to show some acknowledgment of the good work done by Miss Hayward, exmatren of Rhodes Convalescent Home. Typical of the letters received by the organisers was one from Mrs Herbert, who said that, during the last ten years, as a member of the North CanHospital Board, she had greatly appreciated Miss Hayward’s sympathetic treatment of the needy cases sent from the hospital, who received the same consideration as the paying guests. Mrs Herbert very much regretted that the community was losing Miss Hay-ward, who would be sadlymissed by the patients at the convalescent home. Mr C. G. M’Kellar said that, as secretary of the home and as a member of the committee, he had known the guest of honour for sixteen years, and he had always found her dependable and loyal to the best interests of the home. An English woman of rare gifts who did her work silently and well, Miss Hayward’s lot had not been an easy one. Having lost her father when she was eighteen, she had had to assist her mother, an invalid sister and a brother, and her burden had been unusually heavy. Mr M’Kellar said that fifty-six people had subscribed £lO2 ss, which he had the pleasure of handing to Miss Hayward with best wishes for the future. The Rev Mr Inwood also spoke of Miss Hayward’s excellent work and wished her great happiness in the future. Afternoon tea. provided by the Rev A. H. Norris and Mrs Norris, assisted by Mesdames Todd and Ensor, was then dispensed.
