BROWNE DENIES CONNECTION WITH GUTTERIDGE CASE.

Inspector Barrett read a statement by Browne at the resumed hearing of . the Gutteridge case, which stated that Browne was never in Essex at night time, and had no connection with the murder. He was not interested in it because it did not affect him. He purchased a Webley revolver from a sailor, and kept it loaded in order to frighten anyone who interefered while he was taking the car to various parts of the country. Cross-examined, Inspector Barrett agreed that from, the beginning to the end Browne denied association with the murder. The police applied for a remand for a fortnight.—Aust. and N.Z. Press Assn. Two men, Browne and Kennedy, are standing trial on a charge of murdering Costable Gutteridge in an Essex lane last year. Browne made a statement to the police, in which he placed the guilt on Kennedies head. Kennedy, when arrested, produced a revolver and threatened the detective, who closed with him and affected his capture.
