LON CHANEY IN LEADING ROLE AT EVERYBODY’S.
To the bulk of theatre-going people, the name of Lon Chaney suggests a gruesome part in a fantastic film, but in “ Mockery,” which is being screened at Everybody’s, Chaney leaves the conventionally thrilling and scientific part usually assigned to him. The whole theme of “ Mockery ” is
Russian, and it is based on the play written by Benjamin Christensen. The time of the play is that when the Whites and the Reds in Russia were at deadliest grips, and all the accepted standards were lost in the horrible melting pot of the change of regime. Aristocrat and peasant and their relations form the basis of this very powerful play. Much of the sombre character of Russia, its vast, lonely expanses, its silent, ignorant peasants and its glittering rich are fused into the film. The second attraction is “ The Silent Lover,” starring the evergreen Milton Sills. Everybody's Select Orchestra, conducted by Mr Albert Bidgood, contributes an admirable musical programme.
