The committee of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association met last night, the chairman (Mr W. N. Seay) presiding. Mr H. G. Wake was welcomed as a delegate representing the Junior Association. . A report of the Canterbury representatives’, successes in provincial and Dominion fixtures was read and adopted. Congratulations were accorded the Canterbury team in winning the Wilding Shield. The report of the Management Committee of the New Zealand Association stated that the committee thought the time opportune to enter for the Davis Cup competition in the European zone, and an entry had been sent in. Mr J. C. Peacock had been asked to act as selector of the New Zealand team. Inquiries were being made about a visit from an English team, and it was hoped that arrangements would be made for such a visit. The entries for the New Zealand championships, held in Christchurch, totalled 242. When the finances were cleared up the profit on the tournament would be satisfactory. The report went on to answer criticism which had been levelled at the conduct of the tournament. Mr J. Longton asked if there had been any correspondence regarding a Tournament Committee from the Canterbury Association to help in running the tournament. In reply, Mr Browning said that he suggested to Mr Murray Kean by letter that Mr P. R. Harman and himself be co-opted as a committee. He received no reply, and when the programme came out there was no mention of a committee. Mr Longton stated further that such a committee would have been very valuable. The North Island players thought that Canterbury officials were purposely holding aloof from the running of the tournament. The entertainment of the visitors left much to be desired. The report was adopted. Messrs F. J. Murray, W. N. Seay, and R. Browning were elected delegates to the Junior Association. It was resolved to give the Grounds Committee power to proceed with the work of laying down four more grass courts at Wilding Park. Canterbury’s share of the gate receipts for the New Zealand tournament was reported to be £143. TOURNAMENT TENNIS NOT FAIR ON PLAYERS. The opinion that the conduct of championship tennis tournaments as carried out at the present time, did not give thje competitors a chance was expressed at. last, night's meeting of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association. “We who have played tennis in the past.” said Mr Seay, “played it primarily as a game for pleasure, and we are getting away' from this viewpoint in our championship tournaments.” Tt. 1 was not fair, he said, to ask members

to play when they were in an exhausted condition, especially women. In England, America and Australia play'ers were never asked to play more than two five-set matches in the same day. It was hardest on the best players who were kept in. The best tennis w'as only obtained by getting lit for the finals. Players could not give a creditable display if played to death. They should either extend the time or have preliminary' rounds. As the tournaments, both Dominion and provincial, got larger, the position became worse. Mr H. S. Wilkinson thought that the position w'as accentuated by a number of local players who were far below championship standard entering for the Dominion tournaments. They' should limit the number of local players in Dominion tournaments. Mr R. Browning’s opinion was that the Dominion tournament was held at the wrong time. If they w r ere held later the players w'ould know their form better. No specific recommendations were forthcoming from the discussion.
