UNEMPLOYED TOTAL GROWS IN AUCKLAND.

(Special to the “Star.”) AUCKLAND, February 20. Although the number on the Labour Bureau's register shows an increase of 202 on the preceding week, more serious development in the unemployment situation is not to be inferred. The unemployed have been urged to register in order that the Government may obtain a reliable estimate of the number out of work. It was recently announced that the Government would place 2000 men on public works in the North Island and the prospect of being engaged has also acted as an incentive to men to place their names on the Department’s books. Thus the increased registrations were fully anticipated and in some quarters* it is expected that the total now standing at 1027 will eventu ally reach 1200.
