SYNTHETIC FLAPPER.
llll!lllll]l!lllllllllllltl|[tl]!lllll!!llll||I|{||||||||||l!llll|}|ll1lllll|]tilli!lil!lllill)!l!IIIIl] LONDON, December 9. The “flapper” having been described by* Dr E. F. Armstrong, of the British Dy'estuffs Corporation, as the Patron Saint of Chemistry, a “Daily News” representative yesterday' subjected her to analysis. As a result, here are ruthlessly' exposed a few of the concoctions with which, with the co-operation of the chemist, she seeks to improve on nature:— Hair -“improved” with henna, which is vegetable juice, and peroxide, which is a chemical compound. Eyes—“improved” by' blackening the eyebrows and the eyelashes with carbon (coal-dust) and by' heightening the sparkle with belladonna. Cheeks —“improved” with face-pow-der which is fuller’s earth, or talc powder or chalk, made to bloom again with red oxide of lead, and “preserved” with petroleum jellies with various oxides. Lips—“improved” with grease paint. Jewels—opaline glass treated with hydro-fluoric acid. Clothes—artificial silk, produced from carbo-hy'drates treated with nitric acid and dissolved in alcohol. Shoes—made of paper, tinted with vegetable colouring and stamped to look like lizard skin or crocodile leather. Furs -fabrics treated by w'eird and wonderful chemical processes. Hat—probably' a paper composition devised to look like, straw. Mix well together and there you have the Modern Flapper. In spite—or in consequence (as you will) —of these arts and artifices, it must be admitted that there is really something rather bewitching about her. That “something” would probably defy anah'sis.
