Capable of shooting a stream of water nearly twice the height of the 223 ft towers of Notre Dame Cathedral, a new fire engine, latest acquisition of the Paris fire department, is the most powerful land fire-fighting machine in the world. At two-thirds of a mile it can, if necessary, pump the water that it hurls in torrents on a blazing j building. Only the fire boats of New York and London can surpass the jet thrown by this mighty machine, the force of which is such that two men are required to handle the nozzle. The pump itself weights six and onc-half tons.
