The State of California reckoned that in Spencer it possessed the fastest quarter-miler in the world, but Michigan thought otherwise, declaring that Alderman was the speedier. Spencer and Alderman competed at the Intercollegiate championship meeting, and while Spencer failed to qualify in the preliminaries. Alderman won his heat and the final, the latter in 4S 3-10 sec. In the sunnier Californian climate Spencer had done better than 4Ssec.
j The picture has caught that most J effective but most elusive of things—j atmosphere. 11 breathes romance in j every scene. The actors seem to come to life on the screen. The complete i realism makes one forget that the theatre is there, forget that one is just an onlooker, and not a living part of the drama that is being enacted. There is excitement enough and to spare pro. vided by the quick-moving incidents in the underworld where “The Panther” reigns supreme by the only right that the underworld can appreciate—the right of a strong arm and hard blows. The love themes have a degree of novelty that is quite refreshing, and the degree of suspense that is engendered as the climax approaches holds the attention of the audience closely. There is a quite unusual ending. Indeed, in no respect doss the picture follow the stereotyped lines. The story is original both in conception and inode of treatment, a fact that contributes importantly to {.he great success of the picture. It is safe to predict that “The Apache” is destined to take its place among the great pictures when the public have been given an opportunity of judging it for themselves.
