ENGLISH CLERK STEALS FROM AUCKLAND CITY COUNCIL.
CIRCUMSTANCES NO EXCUSE, SAYS S.M. (Special to the “ Star.”) AUCKLAND, June 22. Samuel Stewart Sharpe (42), clerk, employed by the Auckland City Council, pleaded guilty this morning to stealing £33 5s collected in os license fees over a long period. lie came from England four years ago and secured a position in the traffic branch in 1924, and later was appointed to the permanent staff at a salary of £250 a year, lie got into difficulties over marriage and fully intended repaying on the arrival of money from Home: Some actually arrived ‘too late, the matter having got into the hands of the police. INIr M’Kean, in convicting and remanding Sharpe till June 29 for sentence, said that the circumstances were no excuse for the theft of an employer's funds. It was a gross breach of trust.
