LARGE DEFICIT ON UNIVERSITY.
GOVERNMENT SHOULD HELP, IT IS URGED. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, June 22. The report of the treasurer of the Otago University shows a deficit for the year over all debts of £3366. The actual debt on the Medical School was £4272. The treasurer comments that, with the council unwilling to adopt a sx-stem of estimates at the beginning of the year, and acceding to fresh demands during the year, the debit next year, without further assistance, might well be £*sooo. The treasurer further points out that adequate assistance from the Government should be forthcoming for recognised national schools, quoting the commissioner’s statement as follows:—“It obviously unfair that the needs of a national school should be supplied in part from funds required for the maintenance of a local college with which it happens to be connected.”
