NAVY LEAGUE “AT HOME.”

Mrs Algar Williams and the members of the Women’s Auxiliary Committee, Mesdames Percy Overton, If. Wyatt, Dampier-Crossley, C. J. Treleaven, W. Fox, S. Calton, 11. T. J. Thacker, L. Phipps, Black and Trevor Foster, the Misses Boyle, Cresswell and Hey wood, gave an “at home” in the Navy League Hall last night. A large number of members of the Navy League accepted the invitation, and enjoyed the musical programme provided by Mrs J. E. Russell, Mrs S. Parr and Mrs Chennells. During the evening, Mrs W. G. Roberts gave an interesting account of the work done by the Citizens’ Depot recently opened for the relief of the unemployed and their dependents. The committee is meeting with generous support and many gifts in kind are received. Any money sent in is subsidised £1 for £1 by the Government and by the City Council. Mrs Roberts attributed the sympathetic response of the public to the system devised by Mrs Herbert. Work is found for those who apply for relief up to the value of the rations or help given. Mrs Roberts mentioned many distressing casts and she said there was an urgent need of warm clothing, especially for very young children. The worst time had yet to come and bad weather meant that work could not be done and more help would be needed. She made a stirring appeal to the women of the Navy League to help the women and children of the city. Mrs Algar Williams stated that they had thought of starting some work for the relief of naval dependents in England, but, after listening to Mrs Roberts’s appeal, she felt that members would like to help the immediate local need, and a resolution was carried that garments should be made at once and i that another meeting should be held at a later date to report progress. A dainty supper was then served to I the guests present. The quaint table decorations were pastel-sliaded shell flowers.
