MAORIS WOULD DEVOTE COMPENSATION MONEY TO EDUCATING YOUTH.
(Special to the “Star.”) . WANGANUI, June 15. In connection with the matter of compensation for Maori rights on the Wanganui River a conference is to be held at Parakino, up the river, this week, to which representatives of the Young Maori Party are invited. The underlying principles are not so much that the Maoris along the river desire compensation, but to cater for the broader of the Maoris generally along the W est Coast and devote the money to educational purposes. YV here bright young Maoris are discovered in primary schools the idea is to carry them through the universities with their education. At the present time i n this district there are scores of young Maoris who, if educated, would be capable of holding better positions but who are only swelling th® ranks of ordinary labourers.
