CATHEDRAL GROUNDS.

To the Editor. Sir.—A paragraph states that it has just been discovered that a portion of the east side of the Cathedral Square grounds belongs to the public and that a “caveat ’ should be lodged by the City Council within a month if it is to be retained by the public. This has been known by a few people for years, but I presume it was thought that at anv time when required the land could be resumed by the council. As the paragraph suggests, the recent wholesale work of bringing all titles

under the Land Transfer Act may mean its final severance from public ownership unless prompt action is taken. I understand that the strip of land ■is about twelve feet wide at its widest point, on the extreme east of the grounds, running out to nothing on •either side- -a crescent shaped piece. This strip may not be wanted immediately, but changes in transport conditions may make all the difference in a few years. The council ought to secure its position now. hut allow the land to remain in the Cathedral grounds until wanted for public purposes - 1 am, etc., LOOKING AHEAD.
