WHY BOOKMAKING FLOURISHES.
To «Fe Editor. Sir.—T read with great interest vour leader on why bookmaking flourishes, and my regret is that you did not go a little further by pointing out that thousands of pounds are going out of the country annually to Tasmanian sweepstakes. whereas if they were held here, the percentage taken by the Government would go a long way tow’ards paving the old age pension. We all. of course, greatly admire the annual effort of the police to get even with the bookmaker, and acknowledge that this law is difficult to enforce. But the time-honoured British justice seems to vary somewhat. Why is it that in Timaru it costs a quarter of what it does in Christchurch to wipe out this sin of betting?—l am. etc.. OBSERVER.
