NOW THEY WEAR SPATTEES
BY
SINBAD.
However cold the winter breezes blow, the girls are all determined they won’t freeze. Beneath abhre viated skirts they show their shapely ankles covered with spattees. The problem of silk stockings splashed with mud has always vexed the girls when winter’s near. The Russian boot was swiftly proved a dud, for wrinkles in it rapidly appear. “ But/’ mused the girls, " the dress is now a kilt, •* and since we’ve taken up the Scottish schema, why shouldn’t we adopt it to the hilt?” And so spattecs were fashioned, it would seem. The net effect is striking to the eye; the finest of silk stockings still are worn, yet ankles are invariably dry, nor by the chilly breezes made forlorn. The fashion is both sensible and chic, but there’s one disadvantage with sputteea. Unless the skirts are lengthened pretty quick, there’ll bo a lot of very chilly knees.
