BURGLARS ACTIVE IN AUCKLAND.

(Special to the “Star.*') AUCKLAND, May 7. Since the beginning of April, an average of slightly more than one burglary a day has occurred in Auckland. This wave of breaking and entering shows no signs of abating. The nature of the burglaries and the class of goods stolen in the majority of cases points to the belief that the thieves were anxious to take something they could easily turn into cash. Tobacco and cigarettes have been particularly popular, and tobacconists and storekeepers have had stocks depleted to the extent of over £2OO. With one or two exceptions, the burglaries were not of a very serious nature. An attempt was made to blow open the safe of the New Lynn post office at the beginning of ApriL This is the only case in which explosives were used. Prior to April 1, Auckland experienced only a normal number of burglaries, the total number for the first three months of the year being twelve. During March the most ambitious burglai y of the year occurred, when thieves broke into*the premises of Arctic Furs, Ltd., and removed furs valued at between £6OO and £7OO. In addition to breaking and entering, there have recently been reported many cases of petty thieving and lifting. A particularly mean type of theft is the habit of certain persons to enter sheds at sports grounds on Saturdays during the absence of players and rifle clothes.
