Unusually cold weather prevailed i-i Ashburton over the week-end, snow falling on Saturday on the higher country and covering the hills to a depth of one foot. About, an inch fell at Mount Somers township, with five or six inches a few miles up the Ashburton Gorge. A Norwegian seaman recently crossed the North Sea alone in an open sailing boat 25ft long. Two days out the boat sprang a leak, and for eight days the sailor had to bail out every three hours, day and night.
