SOU’-WEST WIND AND HEAVY RAIN IN CITY ON FRIDAY NIGHT.

CROWD IN THE SQUARE RUSHES FOR SHELTER. It seems that fate has decreed that Christchurch’s share of wet and gusty weather shall come on or about the week-end. All this week the weather has been of a welcome summer quality, but at nine o'clock last night the wind dropped and the rain, which had been threatening yesterday afternoon, came on with a vengeance. In the Square, where the late shoppers were thronging, the suddenness of the change of wind to the south-west, and the descent of the torrents of rain caused consternation. Coats had been confidently left at home, and many a summer frock proved sadly inadequate to meet the changed conditions. The tram shelter was crowded with those who meant to keep dry at the cost of much pushing and jostling. Every outward bound tram was packed. Later the rain eased off somewhat, but there were frequent heavy showers, and at midnight the weather showed no signs of ceasing. One or two light showers fell this morning, and the sou’ west wind and cloudy sky do not give a very reassuring prospect for the week-end.

No damage was done to telegraph lines, and the system is working under normal conditions. The lines from Lake Coleridge are also intact.
