telegraphed from Rumania that King Ferdinand's condition is hopeless, he being attacked by cancer. The remarkable story of the circumstances surrounding the visit of Queen Marie of Rumania to America has been revealed to me from a source very close to the Rumanian Court, wrote the Vienna correspondent of the “ Westminster Gazette ” on October 14. The Queen insisted on making the trip now in face of strong opposition, because King Ferdinand is very ill. The physicians do not know whether he is suffering from cancer or atrophic cyrrhosis of the liver, but they only give him another two years to live. The doctors themselves said to the Queen, “If you don’t go to America now you won’t ever go as the Queen.” This week Queen Marie, Princess Ileana and Prince Nicholas left New York in an effort to reach Rumania before Christmas, having been recalled owing to the King’s condition.
