WHERE DO COLLECTIONS GO?
To the Editor. Sir.—l was interested in a letter on the Giosy Smith Mission, written by “ One Of the Unemployed," which appeared in your paper yesterday, for I think that too much emphasis is being given to the financial aspect of the mission. In that connection I have noted that the chairmen have made a verystrong point that not a penny of the collection goes to Gipsy Smith. In a literal sense this may be true. I take it that all the pennies, shillings, halfpence, half-crowns and notes will be put in the bank, and that the missionary will accept a cheque ior his services. But, as far as I can make out, iit is rot true in any* other sense; for is it not well enough known that the churches have had to give a guarantee in advance to pay the salary of the missioner, and if the collections do not cover expenses, plus salary, the guarantors will fall in? If this is sj. and I challenge anyone to disprove it, it is surely tiresome to hear it continually stated that “ rot a penny of the collections goes to the Gipsy.”—Yours, etc,, FREE FAITH.
