NEW ZEALAND WILL COME OUT ON TOP.

BALANCE OF TRADE IS MORE SATISFACTORY THIS YEAR THAN LAST. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, November 24. Brief references were made by the Hon. A. D. M’Leod at the conference of the Associated Chambers of Commerce to the Imperial Conference and the admission of Germany to the League of Nations. If must be obvious, he said, that the present conference had materially altered or was going to alter, our position with the head of the Empire. It had set out a different status for the King himself, and for his representatives, and this had apparently met, with the approval of all the Dominions and was, it was believed, the sincerely hoped for further step in cementing the feeling which the different parts of 1 the Empire had for one another. The admission of Germany to the ' League of Nations must have a big 1 effect on trade, not only with the Empire, but throughout the world. Mr M’Leod struck an optimistic note that despite the present period of depression New Zealand would eventually come out on top. New Zealand was a strong, wealthy country. “We are now having one of our periods of depression certainly,” he said, “and we will have them in future, and it is only by earnest hard work and a desire to view the difficulties of all sections of the community that we will be able to surmount these difficulties. ” So long as that spirit was shown by all sections of the community he did not anticipate difficulties. It was satisfactory to know that the trade balance for nine months of this year was more satisfactory than it was last year, the export and import figures almost approximating each other, and the export period still was ahead. He had no fears about the position.
