N.S.W. SPORTSMAN SELLS RAM FOR CH’CH HOSPITAL.

“He is a sportsman of the right type,” said Mr W. E. Leadley, when news of a cheque for £52 10s came to the meeting of the North Canterbury Hospital Board to-day. The money represented the proceeds from the sale of the special Merino ram of the Boonoke stud, owned b\’ Mr Otway R. Falkiner, of Urana, New South Wales. Mr Falkiner, a well-known Australian sportsman and stud sheep breeder, and a principal in •the firm of Messrs? F. S. Falkiner and Sons, owners of the well-known Boonoke Merino stud, visited Christchurch last week in connection with the auctioning some of the firm’s Merino rams, and during the sale gave instructions that one of the rams be auctioned Oil behalf of the Christchurch Hospital. This information was contained in a letter to the board from Messrs Wright Stephensbn and Co. “I know you will all be with me in passing a vote of thanks to Mr FalW iner,” said the chairman (Mr 11. J. Otley), “especially in view of his having been a visitor. You kow the position in New South Wales. The hos. pitals there have to beg for every penny they get, and it is men like Mr Falkiner who have to subscribe very heavily to them.” "He is a sportsman of the right type.” said Mr Leadley, to which Mr A. T. Smith added: “I’m sorry he didn’t win the Melbourne Cup. He came third.”
