RICCARTON RECORDS

BOROUGH NOTES AND NEWS

Bv Our Special Correspondent.

WHARENUI SCHOOL CONCERT. The Riccarton Town Hall was crowded on Tuesday night despite the wet weather, when a concert was given by the Christchurch United Banjo Band, leader Mrs Reeves and conductor Mr L. W. Bloy. It was necessary to extend the stage as there are thirty-five instrumentalists in the band. It was a great musical treat and one greatly appreciated by the large audience. It is to be hoped that Riccarton may get a return visit from this talented combination. The supporting programme, too, was very good. The proceeds were in aid of the prize and picnic funds of the school. The following was the programme:—Selection, BanjoBand; club swinging, gymnasium girls; piano solo, Norma Haldane; hornpipe, Isabel M’Lean; dance duo. Misses M. M’Lean and B. Stevens; song. Miss Gladys Rose; recitation, Kathleen Read; solo dance, Gladys Rose; Irish country dance, gymnasium girls; selection, Banjo Band; recitation, Gladys Rose; Dutch clog dance, Nancy Chisholm; Irish jig, Isabel M’Lean; pyramids, gymnasium girls; tumbling, gymnasium girls. A vote of sympathy , was passed to Mrs Barton on the death of her son. Reports from the various superintendents of departments were received and proved satisfactory. It was resolved to send a donation to l\liss Baughan and also to Mrs Williams, of Deaconess House. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Buckley for her interest in the Prison Department. Mrs Swallow has now been appointed superintendent of this department. One new member was initiated. A collection was taken up for the Maori Fund. WIIARENUI SCHOOL CRICKET. The Wliarenui School has started the cricket season well, having defeated Addington, Richmond and Woolston. Scores:— Wharenui v. Addington, 105 to 45 (Bull 12, Balfour 33, Kyle 11, R. Cannon 20, Smith 16 not out). Cannon took five wickets and Kyle four wickets. Wharenui won by 60 runs. Wharenui v. Richmond, 121 to 46 (R. Cannon 51 retired, Kyle 18, Bull 12, Lowe 11). Cannon took four wickets, Lowe two wickets and Kyle two wickets. Wharenui won by 78 runs. Wharenui v. Woolston, 56 to 47 (Kyle 12, Cannon 12). Cannon took five wickets and Kyle three wickets. The Wharenui School is to be congratulated on the large number of entries received for the schools’ sports meeting held last week at Lancaster Park. Over 140 entered, and that from a school with a roll number of •under 400 indicates a fine sporting spirit among the scholars. This ought to be an example to schools that with larger roll numbers had less entries.

Though no firsts came to Wharenui. still they enjoyed the sports and did their best for the honour of the school. Wm. Wood, Motor and General Engineer, begs to announce that he will shortly be moving into more convenient premises, now in course of erection, at 102, Riccarton Road (next to the dairy), where he will carry on the business he recently established in Straven Road, of Motor-car Maintenance, Repairs and Overhauls. Two petrol pumps will be installed, and a supply of oils will be on hand, while tyres and tubes can be supplied at short notice. 6
