MR A. FERGUSON DIES AT AGE OF 78

FORMER MANAGER OF NATIONAL BANK. The death occurred thi9 morning at his residence, 222, Papanui Road, of Mr Alexander Ferguson, formerly manager of the Christchurch branch of the National Bank of New Zealand, at the age of seventy-eight. The late Mr Ferguson was born in Ross-shire, and was educated at the Tain Academy. He served for about three years in the British Linen Company’s bank at Tain, and then removed to London, joining the staff of the Oriental Bank Corporation. Subsequently he had a 6hort commercial experience in Liverpool, and in 1573, on the formation of the National Bank of New Zealand, he joined the London staff. Four years later he was transferred to New Zealand and appointed to the position of accountant to the Christchurch branch, subsequently occupying positions as manager at Balclutha and Timaru. In ISSS he returned to Christchurch as manager of the branch, and remained in that position until his retirement from the bank’s service in 1917. Mr Ferguson was one of the original trustees of the Hyman Marks Trust and retained that position until his death. He was also a member of the Board of Governors of St Andrew’s College since inception, and took a very keen interest in the affairs of the College, being one of the most regular attenders at its prize givings and sports gatherings. In his younger days he was a keen tennis player at both Christchurch and Timaru. Mr Ferguson was very widely known and respected in business circles throughout the Dominion, but since his retirement he had not taken an active part in commercial affairs. lie was a member of the Canterbury Club, and was also prominently connected with the Navy League. lie leaves a widow and two sons and two daughters, Mr David Ferguson, of Auckland, Mr Claude Arthur Ferguson, of Chrisy church, Miss Ruth Ferguson, of Waipukurau, and Miss K. G. Ferguson, of Christchurch. Mr David Ferguson is the author of “The History of the Canterbury Regiment, N.Z.E.F.” Another son, Fergus Ferguson, was killed at Flers in the Battle of the Somme, 1916. The interment, which will be private, will take place on Monday.
