IS IDENTIFICATION PARADE A BLUFF?

To the Editor. Sir, —I was pleased to notice in vour article of yesterday that you raised the point as to whether a person in an identification parade was entitled to be represented by a solicitor. The Judge says that the person paraded for the purposes of identification is not charged and therefore not in need of a solicitor. But, Sir, as you pointed out, a person in custody ought not to be denied the services of a solicitor and may need one urgently for his own protection. If the Judge’s ruling is right, then I take it that the identification parade is just a police bluff and no one is obliged to submit to it. I would very much like someone to answer this question. Don’t the police have to lay a charge before they have a right to arrest anyone?—l am, etc., PPR PT .17 Y IT TO
