MOTORIST, 16, FINED £10; LICENSE CANCELLED FOR TWO YEAR TERM.

Arising out of an accident which occurred on the Great North Road on the night of_ May 14, when a woman was injured, Harold George Walker was fined £lO on a charge of negligent drix--ing. by Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Police Court. Evidence was gix en that accused was driving a truck at about 7.30 p.m., when the woman xvas knocked down by the mudguard and injured. The accident xvas reported by accused to the Nexvton police ten minutes after it occurred. Walker, in the statement xvhich xvas given to the police, said he saw txvo women standing in the middle of the road. He attempted to ax r oid them by going betxveen the pedestrians and the footpath, but one woman stepped back and xvas knocked down. He said he was at between fifteen and twenty miles an hour and that he pulled up in three yards. Counsel asked the Magistrate to take into consideration that Walker had only recently turned sixteen and that he had not long left school. He had a license to drive. In addition ,to a fine of £lO, defendant was also ordered to pay costs totalling £6 11s 2d, xvhile the Magistrate cancelled his license for a period of txvo years.
