STOCK PRICES.

SUMMARY OF YSSTERDAY’S SALE. The entry of fat cattle at the weeklv stock sale at Addington yesterclay totalled 648 head, compared with 400 last week. On the whole the quality was better than has been the case for some time. A feature of the entry was the number of lines of well-finished steers forwarded by Peninsula and North Canterbury graziers. There were also some drafts of cattle from the North Island, but these showed signs of having gone, back in condition. On account of the heavy entry, the demand was not so brisk as last week. The market was erratic, but, taking it as a whole, there was a general easing in prices amounting to 20s a head on late rat.es. Towards the end of the sale the demand became very slack, and at this stage all but the best stuff was hard to quit. Passings were heavier than has been the case for some time. Prices a 1001 b were: Extra prime beef, to 41s; prime medium-weight. 37s to 39s 6d: heavyweight, 35s to 375; North Island beef, 35s 6d to 37s 6d; good heifer beef, 33s to 35s 6d; good cow beef, 32s to 345; inferior, 25s to 275; and rough down to 21s.

The yarding of fat sheep was the smallest seen at Addington for some time. It comprised a little over nine races, compared with eleven last week. The quality’, on the whole, was good, there being many good pens of both wethers and ewes offered. The sale was a satisfactory’ one from the point of view of vendors, though big wethers were slightly easier than last w’eek. Ewes, however, sold at fully late rates. Yesterday's sale was the first since the closing of the freezing works, and the export buyers who operated made purchases on behalf of the local wholesale trade only’. There w’as a moder-ate-sized entry’ of store sheep. It consisted mainly of ewes. Most of the ewes sold readily’, especially any showing well in lamb. There was also a good demand for wethers and hoggets. The only quotable line of store cattle forward was one of twenty odd three and four-year-old steers, which made up to £9 2s 6d. The rest of the entry consisted of cows and bulls, which sold at late rates. The yarding of dairy’ cattle totalled 66 head. The quality was better than last week, but the sale was not very’ bright, and an easing in prices was recorded, though in one or two cases, late rates were fully maintained. One heifer made £l4, but none of the others came anywhere near this price. The number of vealers fit for butchers’ purposes offered was quite inadequate for the demand, and the result was that this class sold very’ well at prices about 15s a head in advance of those ruling at the previous sale.

.A fnedium entry of fat pigs met with a good demand, and an improvement in prices was recorded for porkers and baconers. Porkers, especially, sold well. The yarding of store P l .*’® , wa ? small, and they improved slightly’ in price.
