NOTES ON RECEPTION. Mr L. P- Simpson, of 25, Gloucester Street, Christchurch, writes under date July 3: — It may be of interest to readers of your column to know that 2FC, Farmers, Sydney, has been coming in recently at excellent strength, but for some reason this station does not give the volume in the early part of the evening as do the other Australian stations operating on the lower wavelengths. However, from 10.45 p.m. to 1.30 a.m. New Zealand time, during the last three nights 2FC has been simply “ roaring in,” the strength exceeding any other Australian station and fading negligible. One Oswald, but he did not cause a great deal of trouble. I obtained very good reception from this station last year, but this winter T have not had very good results from it until recently. On Wednesday night at eleven o’clock I tuned-in during an item, the “ Barber of Seville”; 1 then heard'that it was the singer’s (a foreign name) first appearance at 2FC. and that he was direct from 2LO, London. The same artist gave several numbers and at the conclusion spoke to Marie Burke (who was apparently listening-in . in hospital) about the sad railway accident, of which she was one of the victims, and said he felt sure that all listeners-in trusted that she would soon be well and strong again. A change to the Wentworth Hotel followed and dance numbers continued until midnight. Sydney time. The strength of these items was really astounding. On Thursday night, band items came through spTendidly, also a number of old-time popular songs, including comic items, and again to the Wentworth Hotel until 1.30 am. New Zealand time, if you felt so inclined.

Last night (Friday), items by Gladstone Bell (cello), Lionel Lawson (violin), Walter Kingsley ,a magnificent baritone, Ivan Taylor., tenor, and several other excellent artists, left nothing to be desired. A change over to the Wentworth followed and the music and laughter, etc., from the cabaret really took one to SydneyTHE WEEK-END CONCERTS. “Aerial” had visitors at his station on Saturday and Sunday evenings, so notes on reception during the weekend arc somewhat patchy. On Saturday night, the air was crowded. with New Zealand and Australian transmissions and badly cluttered up with ship and shore code operators. YLW seemed to be the worst offender. It is high time the Government eithe r shifted VLW’s wave-length out of the broadcast waveband or put in a transmitter there that will not occupy so much wavelength space. There was considerable static and, generally, results were not too good .until near 10.30 p.m., when reception improved. Of course, 3AC was the most satisfactory owing to its strength and steadiness. The relay from the Winter Garden was good. Of the others, 4QG, Brisbane, and 3LO, Melbourne, were the best. 4QG advertised for a fine Persian cat which had sprayed from home. The dance programme from Lennon’s (Hotel) was nicely heard. 3LO gave us “all the honours”— quite a number. It was mentioned that twenty-five new knighthoods had been conferred. Sunday night proved ah exceptionally good night for reception. All stations, both New Zealand and Australian, were heard at great strength. 3AC relayed the service from Knox Church. A fine service, lovely music—the organ and choir were splendid—and excellently relaj-ed. Good business, 3AC. 4YA has returned to its Exhibition strength. It roared in. All the Australian stations were visited in turn, 3LO and 4QG again being the best. 2BL, Sydney, announced lath last night that the new station, witli increased power, would be inaugurated to-day, Monday, at 11.40. a.m. (Sydney time), and would continue broadcasting till midnight. The programme, it was stated, would be almost identical with that with which the station was opened three years ago. ANSWERS TO INQUIRIES. ' Aerial ” will be glad 'to answer any questions pertaining to wireless, or give advice on the subject. . ° correspondents;-—Mr L* P. Simpson: Sorry.
