Mrs Bruce Beamsley (Southbridge), who recently underwent an operation at Christchurch Hospital, is now 1 well enough to return to her home. Miss M. Friedeman, who has been spending an extended holiday with her sister, Mrs W. Whinray, Thames, has gone on to Auckland, where she is the guest of Mrs A. Thompson, Herne Bay.’

Having virtually completed her twelve months furlough, Miss M. Woods returns to China this month, leaving Wellington on July 9, states the “Church News.” She has made a strenuous holiday of it. for she has done a great deal of valuable deputation work; she has .iust returned from an extensive tour of Xelson Diocese. A farewell social in her honour, preceded by a service at which the Bishop was to be present, was to be held at St John's on July 2. and on Saturday a formal dismissal service was to be held in the Cathedral at 10 a .in. Miss Woods returns to the position she hold when she left China, in the Mary Vaughan school at IlJng Chow.

A pleasant function took place at the School for the Deaf. Sumner, on Friday afternoon, when the staffs met to say good-bye to Miss A. M. Andrews. who is severing her connection with the staff of the institution in view

of her approaching marriage. The director. Mr J. M. B. Crawford, said that both the teaching and the house staff's regretted losing the services of Miss Andrews. During many years of service she had shown outstanding skill and zeal in her work. She had earned the respect of the members of both

staff*, and had won the love and esteem of the pupils. As a mark of their appreciation and good will he presented her with an entree dish and nut-crackcr set.

The members of the Sumner branch of Dr Barimrdo’s Voting Helpers’ League, held their box opening on Friday afternoon, at St Paul’s Methodist Sunday School. The Rev G. R. Peterson outlined the history of the movement. The president. Mrs R. Ogier, thanked the children for their year's efforts, and urged them to endeavour to get new members. They were learning to help others. They had started with a membership of six and now the membership totalled thirty. She had received apologies for absence from Mrs 11. J. Marriner and Miss R. J. Bowden (treasurer). The following programme was given;— Song. Arthur Reynolds; recitation, Janette King; recitation, Bvllee Brown: songs, Dorothy Alexander; song, Margaret Paterson, Xancy Alexander and Elaine Fryer. Among those assisting were:—Mrs G. F. Allen, Mrs H. W. and Miss Edna Hislop. The members were entertained at tea. The box opening resulted in about £6 being handed in.
